About Mnemonics
You have heard "thirty days hath September,
April, June and November", to remember the number of days in the
months. If you've taken music you will have heard "every good boy does
fine" to remember the notes which appear on the lines of the treble
clef. Your English teachers may have taught the rhyme "I before E
except after C". These aid memory.
When you say "Oh, that reminds me...." you
can be assured that a memory was cued. Something has caused you to remember
something. When you originally remembered the thought, it was somehow
connected to the cue. When the cue appears again the memory returns. There
is an association between the cue and the memory which was made during the
original experience. Mnemonics also uses this principle.
The first step in learning mnemonics is developing the
minds eye. Simply using it improves its ability and increases the vividness
of mental imagery. The next step is to connect these mental images.
Connecting images is the basis for the "link method" of mnemonics.
When you or your student are faced with a memory
problem…Jump out of the box and create your own mnemonic!

Adding and subtracting with 9's and 8's
9 and 8 want to be ten like any normal 8 or 9 year old child…
But luckily they both come with a great secret clue! The 9 has one
vacumn cleaner nozzle to suck up one unit and the 8 has two nozzles to
suck up 2 units. Making the sucking noises help a lot.

Imagine you're in a town in the Wild West.
You've got good guys (+) and bad guys (-),
and they can either come to town (+) or leave town (-).
If the good guys (+) come to town (+), that's good (+).
If the bad guys (-) come to town (+), that's bad (-).
If the good guys (+) leave town (-), that's bad (-).
But if the bad guys (-) leave town (-), that's good (+)!

Skip counting rhymes
make multiplication fun but does not always get the results you
need...why?
Use caution when using skip
counting to song as the information goes into the sub-dominant part of
the brain and may be difficult to find without singing.
- We make up rap and poetry for the interest of different students,
these have worked well when we are introducing the concept. The

(squares, wheels), 5 (pentagons, nickles, minutes on clock), 6, 7
(days of week), 8 (octagons, stop signs) sides.

Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning! |
Rain before seven, fine before eleven. |
No weather is ill, if the wind be still. |

in the atmosphere and dissipate there; on humid, cloudy days, they are
sent back to earth.
